My name is Brenda Lackey. I teach college algebra, business calculus, precalculus, and developmental math courses. I have been at UTM since Fall 1989. Before coming to UTM, I taught similar courses for four years at Fulton County High School in Hickman, Kentucky.
Generally, the writing I require of my students is explanations, justifications, and/or descriptions of procedures and processes. I have had them do projects in groups and write reports about their conclusions. This has not worked as well as I would have liked. Now, I am encouraging students to keep "learning logs" that contain questions they might have, mind maps to use as study guides, their graded papers, etc. These logs help students to be more organized in their study and helps when they come to the office for help sessions.
I am willing to work with other faculty on writing. Any suggestions for writing in mathematics would be appreciated.
