Dr. Robert Nanney, Department Chair

Senior Seminar, Intro to Media Design/PR and Writing Features


Dr. Robert Nanney is beginning his 26th year with the department and his 18th year as chairman. He has 15 years' experience in print journalism as a reporter, photographer and managing editor. He has won several teaching awards, including the Outstanding Teaching Award by The University of Tennessee National Alumni Association, and has taught with the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Humanities (held at UT Martin) for 24 years. He is co-founder of the department's Media Design sequence. His research specialty is community journalism, and his creative activity involves photojournalism and media design. He is a past president of the UTM Faculty Senate. He holds numerous committee assignments, including the Tennessee Press Association Journalism Committee and the national Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication's Contemporary Leadership Committee. He is UTM’s faculty representative on the University Faculty Council, which is a systemwide advisory group to UT President Dr. Joe DiPietro.
