Career Services
You don't have to have your whole future planned out when you first come to college, but you should begin to focus your interests during the course of your college career. Knowing yourself and knowing about the world of work will help you to make good choices for your academic and personal career. Career Services provides individualized counseling for students (sophomore through senior year) to help them match their interests with their academic major and their eventual choice of a profession. Generally, students are offered the opportunity to take the Strong Interest Inventory and the Myers Briggs Type Inventory (MBTI), two excellent measures that will help you to know yourself. You do need to make an appointment to take these tests. Each of these assessments takes about 45 minutes to complete, and there are no right or wrong answers - just answer the questions honestly and completely, so we can obtain an accurate profile. There is no charge for the MBTI; the Strong Interest Inventory costs $10. After the results are available (this usually takes about two weeks), you will be called to set up an appointment with Dr. Beard or one of our other counselors, who will explain your results and talk about options with you. We also have a resource library of career materials that you may use in our office. Dr. Beard also teaches a course called "Career Exploration" (General Studies 201) that provides comprehensive investigation of your career options.
Staff members from Counseling and Career Services are available to provide outreach programming about career choices, including group administration and interpretation of career tests, to classes and other groups. These programs must be scheduled well in advance.
