Dr. Amanda Vanhoose

Amanda Vanhoose

Prior to teaching, Dr. Vanhoose was a Medical Research Scientist at Vanderbilt University investigating neural circuits that regulate metabolism, diabetes, and obesity. She began teaching as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Biology at Belmont University. In 2011, Dr. Vanhoose was accepted as a Teach Tennessee Governor’s Fellow and received training to teach science in grades 7-12 before joining Adamsville Jr/Sr High School staff, where she taught Biology to grades 9-12 for 5 years. Now, Dr. Vanhoose is a full time Instructor with the Department of Biology at the University of Tennessee at Martin and she teaches Biology and Zoology courses at UT Martin centers located in Selmer, Parsons, and Jackson. In addition, she also teaches a dual enrollment Biology course at Adamsville Jr/Sr High School.

Dr. Abigail Shelton

Dr. Phillip Shelton is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at The University of Tennessee at Martin. He earned his Bachelors Degree in 1997 from Western Kentucky University, along with his Masters Degree in 2001. He then went on to the University of Florida where he earned his Doctorate in 2010.

Dr. Susan Hamilton

Dr. Susan Hamilton

Susan Hamilton grew up in Jackson, TN and moved to Sydney, Australia in 1986. While there, she got married, had a daughter, and completed a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Sydney. Dr. Hamilton began teaching dual enrollment courses in 2002 and is an enthusiastic supporter of the program, as it clearly demonstrates the level of discipline required for university subjects. Thanks to the dual program, high school students are far better prepared to cope with the transition to the regimen of higher education. A life-long fan of science fiction movies, she began writing stories in 2014 and has self-published two novels on Amazon, with a third one in the works.

Barbara Kunkel

Barbara Kunkel

I was born and raised in Texas. I graduated from Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas where I majored in Math and Biology and completed my Texas Teaching Certification. I taught 7th – 12th grade math and biology at a small Texas school for three years, then went to graduate school at Baylor University where I met my Minnesota-born husband. I taught three more years of high school math while he finished his doctorate in math. We picked UTM to call home. This is our 11th year in Martin, working for UTM. I have a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Texas A&M University. My main classroom goal and focus is to make math accessible to students who are not attuned to the rules and language of math.

Dr. Jason Devito

Jason Devito

Jason Devito is an associate professor of mathematics at The University of Tennessee at Martin. He has earned his B.S. in both mathematics and physics from North Carolina State University in 2005, along with his M.S. in mathematics in 2006. In 2011, he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include curvature on biquotients and isometric group actions on non-negatively curved manifolds.
