On July 1, 1984 The Center of Excellence for the Enrichment of Science and Mathematics Education (CEESME) was founded as one of Tennessee's Centers of Excellence under the Better Schools Program. In later years the name was changed to The Center of Excellence for Science and Mathematics Education (CESME). On June 30, 2003, the doors of CESME closed after a 19 year run, a victim of the State's higher education budget crisis.
Responsibility for the CESME Internet presence will be assumed by the Center for Environmental and Conservation Education Online (CE/CE Online). CESME web pages will be incorporated into the CE/CE Online web site, thus keeping alive select activities, instructional strategies, and teacher resources. In addition, the CE/CE Online will continue to provide links to the Home Pages of the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association (TMTA) and Tennessee Science Teachers Association (TSTA) as well as Tennessee Environmental Education Association (TEEA) and Tennessee Educators of Aquatic and Marine Sciences (TEAMS).
As the CESME era comes to a close, a great deal of gratitude is owed to those directors and staff persons who worked so hard to make CESME a curricular and instructional resource for Tennessee teachers of mathematics and science at the elementary and secondary levels. Due to their efforts and ingenuity a great deal was accomplished. A special note of thanks goes to all of those teachers who provided such a tremendous influence on the teaching of science and mathematics in Tennessee through the instructional materials prepared, workshops conducted, and presentations made at the local, state, regional, and national levels in the name of CESME associates.
