John M. Judy Environmental
Education Consortium

JOHN M. JUDY

Although some of the faces and the institutions are the same as those formerly asscoated with the Tennessee Valley Authority Environment/Energy Education Network, a new environmental initiative has been launched through the establishment of the John M. Judy Environmental Education Consortium. John M. Judy, the Consortium's namesake, was the Project Director of TVA's Environmental/Energy Education Program and has been credited for the successful establishment, growth and international reputation of excellence of what has now become the John M. Judy Environmental Education Consortium. Prior to his death in the winter of 1995, he was a member of the Tennessee Environmental Education Association (TEEA) and received a special recognition award from TEEA in the Fall of 1994. John was also a member of the North American Association For Environmental Education (NAAEE) and received the Walter T. Jeske Award for 1994 which is NAAEE's highest honor.

The purpose of the Consortium is to promote and enhance environmental education through systemic change toward infusing a collective environmental consciousness and individual environmental ethic into the learning and teaching process. It is the belief of the membership represented in the consortium that environmental education should constitute a comprehensive life-long education that will prepare each individual for everyday life and responsible citizenry.

The activities of the Consortium generally reflect the definition of environmental education cited in the First Report of the National Advisory Council on Environmental Education, "Environmental education is the interdisciplinary process of developing a citizenry that is knowledgeable about the total environment, including both its natural and built aspects, that has the capacity and the commitment to engage in inquiry, problem-solving, decision-making and action that will assure environmental quality."

The primary objectives of the John M. Judy Environmental Education Consortium are:

    to be active in teacher preparation, community outreach, program development, and research related to environmental education;

    to develop a cadre of individuals who will serve as environmental education consultants and spokespersons for the environmental education community;

    to provide learning opportunities for students, pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, non-formal educators and the general public throughout the Tennessee Valley and surrounding areas; and

    to build partnerships between public and private organizations to improve the quality of the environment.

There is a member Center within 50 miles of most schools in Tennessee. The next time you want to take your class on a field trip, need a speaker for a class project or inservice session, or are trying to find materials or pictures relating to environmental or energy education, call the Center nearest to you. In the event that the activity you are trying to arrange is not included in the mission of the contacted Center, the Center staff can refer you to another Center or some other agency that provides the service you are seeking. If you have difficulty finding addresses or telephone numbers for the Centers, contact the CE/CE, 901-587-7200, for assistance.
