Bridge the Barriers Between Languages

The Department of English and Modern Foreign Languages at UT Martin’s mission is to provide courses for our students that enable them to communicate more effectively, understand themselves better, and grow as individuals.

The department lays the foundation for self-expression, written and oral communication, and creative adaptation to the changing realities of life.

Program Outcomes

Department Scholarships

Driver/Goad English Scholarship

The Driver/Goad English Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior majoring in English. Must be a permanent U.S. resident.

J. Paul and Myrtle Phillips Language Arts Scholarship

The J. Paul and Myrtle Phillips Language Arts Scholarship goes to a student majoring in English with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Kellie Jones English Scholarship

The Kellie Jones English Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in English with a 3.0 GPA or higher. First preference to a non-traditional student retiring to school, who is 23 or older. Financial need is to be considered.

Stephen and Bea Mohler Study Scholarship

The Stephen and Bea Mohler Study Scholarship is awarded to upperclassmen Spanish majors with financial need after they have returned from a travel study experience and submitted an essay to the department chair. Please contact the English and Modern Foreign Language Department for more information on applying for this scholarship.

Facilities

The Hortense Parrish Writing Center is where students and the surrounding community go to become better writers, get individual tutoring, and experience community outreach.
