Knowledge, Skills, and Application: Assessment

Title of Evidence: Syllabus Assignment

Date Created: 28 March 2004

Course Created In: TCED 302

Introduction and Reflection: The syllabus assignment required a focus to be placed on one specific grade level in order to create a comprehensive outline for a 180 day calendar school year. Instructions included choosing one particular subject or theme and locating a state textbook to aid in planning. From the information gathered, I created a condensed and expanded syllabus, a summary of classroom procedures, and a list of rules.

Interpretations and Reflection: I feel that this assignment greatly reflects the assessment category in that it was based on unit planning and working within time constraints. The assignment helped me focus on assessing materials that must be covered as a means of satisfying state standards and use judgment about other materials that needed to be taught. Also, I gained a realization of how to plan in accordance with formal and informal evaluations, independent practice, and cooperative activities. A great deal of consideration was also placed in planning for students with special needs and students who may be Limited English Proficient (LEP). I also incorporated the knowledge gained from observational experiences to create activities that were both conducive to learning and relevant to the grade level being taught. In essence, the knowledge that I gained on how to work within time constraints, diverse student populations, and other adversities is unmerited. I feel that through the processes associated with this assignment, I have gained valuable knowledge that has better prepared me for my teaching endeavors.

Additional Comments: The knowledge gained as a result of completing this assignment has proved beneficial in many of my other teacher education courses. I feel that I am better able to plan lessons and teach specific materials within specific time constraints.
