ABSENT: Stan Sieber
The meeting began at 3:05 p.m.
The committee reviewed a draft revision (dated 11/1/99) of section 2.9.4 of the Faculty Handbook regarding Cumulative Performance Review. K. Paul Jones prepared the text in response to the committee’s request for draft “Operating Guidelines” for the implementation of the Cumulative Performance Review process. Jones explained that the proposed additions to the Handbook were based largely on the text in the UTK Handbook (as approved by the UT Board).
The committee approved the draft after making the following changes.
· Deleted the words “the categories of” from the sentence in
the second paragraph that reads: “The peer review committee shall examine
the relevant information and shall make an evaluation of the faculty member’s
performance in the categories of teaching, advising, research/scholarship/creative
activity, and service.” This was done in order to eliminate the implication
that advising must be treated as a distinct fourth category in addition
to teaching, research, and public service.
· Added to the beginning of the next sentence the words “The
committee will prepare” in order to make it explicit that the cumulative
performance review judgment is made by the review committee.
· Delegated to the committee chair and academic affairs representative
responsibility for editing the text in order to eliminate any confusion
between references to the departmental cumulative performance review committee
and the committee which must be formed if the review committee judges that
the individual under review “needs improvement for rank” or demonstrates
“unsatisfactory performance for rank.”
The meeting adjourned at approximately 4:15, with the understanding that the draft text, as revised, will be shared with the entire committee via e-mail prior to submission to the Senate.
