The Department of Visual and Theatre Arts created Tennessee's first certification program in Dance Education. The Dance Education emphasis within the BFA in Fine and Performing Arts degree program is designed to prepare those students who seek careers in the field of Dance Education for state licensure, kindergarten through grade twelve. Students are provided the opportunity to develop performance and choreographic skills through progressively rigorous technique classes and academic excellence through scholarly activity that fosters artistic integrity, scholarship, and an appreciation for continued learning.
Students in the BFA: Dance Education emphasis are expected to take technique classes each semester, as well as perform in the UTM Dance Ensemble every year. Classes in choreography, history and criticism, pedagogy, kinesiology, and education are also important components of the degree program. Dance Education students will be placed for student teaching in one of the highly respected K-12 dance programs in the state.
