Low Brass Performance and Pedagogy
Baines, Anthony. Brass Instruments: Their History and Development. London: Faber and Faber, 1976. Reprint, New York: Dover, 1993.
A very important text on brass history. Unfortunately gives a rather abbreviated, undetailed history of the trombone. One of the sources from a previous generation of researchers that comes very close to proclaiming the total extinction of the trombone during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Bate, Philip. The Trumpet and Trombone: An Outline of Their History and Development. 2d ed. New York : Norton, 1978.
Excellent plates of historic and modern instruments. Detailed historical information and construction. Bate does not spend time discussing literature. He does, however present evidence from Galpin and others to date the trombone appropriately. Very little treatment of the trombone's role in the eighteenth century.

Guion, David M. The Trombone: Its History and Music, 1697-1811. New York: Gordon and Breach, 1988.
A detailed and comprehensive source on all facets of trombone repertoire, music, and performance practice during this period. Includes writings about the instrument, as well as analyses of performance practice by genre and geographical location.

Herbert, Trevor. The Trombone. New Haven: Yale University Press, 2006.
The definitive book on trombone history. Herbert is one of the foremost authorities on the history of the trombone. His book takes advantage of sources uncovered in the last thirty years.

Morris, R. Winston and Edward Goldstein, eds. The Tuba SourceBook. Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1996.

Naylor, Tom L. The Trumpet & Trombone in Graphic Arts 1500 – 1800. Brass Research Series, ed. Stephen L. Glover, no. 9. The Brass Press, 1979.
The most extensive collection of prints from this era which include either the trumpet or trombone. Very valuable for examples of historical construction and usage of the instruments. Unfortunately out of print. If you can find it, buy it!
