Kolwinska Info Studio Resources Prospective Students

My name is Jeremy Kolwinska. Here at UT Martin, I serve as the Chair of the Department of Music. I also teach trombone, coach chamber music, and teach courses such as Freshman Studies, Brass Methods, and Masterpieces of Music. My main instrument is the tenor trombone, but I have experience teaching and performing on alto and bass trombone as well as euphonium and tuba.

What I enjoy most about college teaching is that it allows me the opportunity to explore the intersection of my three passions-teaching, learning, and music. I play second trombone in the Jackson Symphony Orchestra and I keep an active schedule of freelance playing in the West Tennessee area. In 2006, I was a Visiting Professor at Hirosaki University in Hirosaki, Japan. During my undergraduate years, I spent two summers playing saxhorns and other Civil-War era instruments in the First Brigade Band of Watertown, Wisconsin. I have also performed with the the Memphis Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra Brass Choir, the Lincoln Symphony, the Omaha Symphony, the Orquesta Sinfonica UANL (Monterrey, Mexico), and numerous other groups.

My family and I moved to Martin in the summer of 2003 from the suburbs of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I grew up in that area, and returned to work on my doctorate at the University of Minnesota where I studied with Thomas Ashworth. While in Minneapolis, I also studied trombone with Douglas Wright, Principal Trombone of the Minnesota Orchestra and tuba with Ross Tolbert, Principal Tubist of the Minnesota Orchestra. My bachelor's degree is from Bob Jones University where I studied trombone with Paul Overly, euphonium with Paul Jantz, and tuba with Daniel Turner. Following BJU, I did my master's degree at the University of Nebraska where I studied with Scott Anderson.
