Chamber Ensembles
Tuba/Euphonium Quartet
Most UTM Low Brass Studio members participate in Chamber Ensembles. Typically, these are small ensembles consisting of three to five members. The most common low brass chamber ensembles are the Euphonium Quartet, Tuba/Euphonium Quartet, Trombone Quartet, and Brass Quintet.
Students who participate in these ensembles usually rehearse one or two hours each week, and may receive a few coaching sessions from Dr. Coker each semester. The ensembles perform a variety of pieces which focus on the basic ensemble skills of pitch, articulation, balance, phrasing, and playing without a conductor. Each ensemble has the opportunity to perform two or more times each semester in Chamber Music Ensemble Recitals and/or additional departmental or university performance venues.
The spring 2007 tuba/euphonium quartet performed an exhibition recital at the Mid-South Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference, held at the University of Memphis, April 20-22, 2007. This ensemble also gave performances for several music classes at Jackson Central Merry High School in Jackson, Tennessee.
The brass quintet consists of two trumpets, one horn, one trombone, and one tuba. Three members of the fall 2006 UTM student brass quintet performed the World Premiere of Bullet by Justin Condron (BM, 2007).
