Faculty Bio
Dr. Bradley G. Coker, a native of Republic, Missouri, is the Assistant Professor of Low Brass and Music Education at the University of Tennessee at Martin. In addition to teaching trombone, euphonium, and tuba he teaches Brass Class, Beginning Instrumental Ensemble Techniques, Literature, and Conducting, and Music in Our Time. Since December of 2005, Dr. Coker has been invited as a semi-finalist for the West Point Military Academy Band, the International Tuba Euphonium Conference Quartet Competition, the Arnold Jacobs Mock Orchestral Audition, and the Leonard Falcone International Tuba Artist Competition. In the Fall of 2007, Dr. Coker was invited to collaborate with Donald C. Little (North Texas) and Scott Watson and James Barnes (both of the University of Kansas) on a forthcoming text on tuba orchestral excerpts.
Dr. Coker completed his DMA in tuba performance with a related field in wind band conducting from the University of North Texas in November of 2007. Dr. Coker's dissertation is entitled The Employment of Historically-Informed Performance Practices in Modern-Day Tuba Performances of Two Italian Baroque Violoncello Transcriptions.
Prior to his studies at North Texas, Dr. Coker served for three years as an Assistant Director of Bands at Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas, where his concert bands consistently received Sweepstakes Awards for concert and sight-reading performances. His article “Success at All Levels,” discussing public school performance experiences, was published in the November 2002 issue of the Southwestern Musician.
Dr. Coker holds a Master of Music degree in tuba performance from Baylor University and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Missouri State University. He completed two seasons as tubist with the Pasadena (Texas) Philharmonic Orchestra and has performed with the San Angelo (Texas) Symphony, the Waco (Texas) Symphony, and the Springfield (Missouri) Symphony. He has performed with the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps as a euphoniumist (1996) and assistant conductor (1997). Dr. Coker won the Drum Corps Midwest contra bass bugle solo competition in 1997 and finished third in the Baylor University Concerto Competition in 2000. He has studied tuba and euphonium with Don Little, Dr. Brian L. Bowman, Mitsuru Saito, Frank Woodruff, Dr. Michael A. Fischer, Robert Loffler, and William Hartman. HIs conducting instructors have included Eugene Migliaro Corporon, Dennis Fisher, Stephen Heyde, and Robert Quebbeman. His trombone instructors were Dr. Kevin Chiarizzio and William Hartman.
