2008-2009
A significant change will occur in the 2008-2009 academic year. The trombone studio will join with the tuba and euphonium studio to form the UTM Low Brass Studio. Dr. Coker will be teaching students on all three instruments.
2007-2008
The 2007-2008 academic year included several noteworthy events for the UTM Low Brass Studio. In September of 2007, Kevin Ward performed an outstanding Senior Tuba Recital in collaboration with Mrs. Delana Easley (piano) and Dr. Coker (tuba). His performance included works by Newton, Corwell, Strauss, and Bach. Lantonio Jackson gave his highly-musical Senior Tuba Recital in December of 2007 (also in collaboration with Mrs. Easley (piano), which included works by Newton, Curnow, Capuzzi, and Rachmaninoff.
The first solo student recital of the Spring 2008 semester featured Tony Ison. His Senior Tuba Recital included a performance of the entire Edward Gregson Tuba Concerto on a contrabass tuba! Other works by Strauss, Wilder, and Rossini involved collaboration with Mrs. Delana Easley (piano) and members of the student brass quintet. The final solo student recital of the semester featured Jenny Cooper. Her Senior Euphonium Recital included works by Barat, Haddad, and de la Nux. In addition to performing with Mrs. Easley (piano), Jenny collaborated with Dr. Coker, Dr. Jeremy Kolwinska, and Jonathan Byrd in a euphonium quartet arrangement of Amazing Grace.
2006-2007
The entire UTM tuba and euphonium studio attended the Mid-South Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference held at the University of Memphis, April 20-22, 2007. The UTM tuba/euphonium quartet gave an exhibition recital, Kevin Ward participated in the Mock Orchestral Tuba Audition, and Jenny Cooper performed in a master class with professional euphoniumist, Demondrae Thurman. All studio members attended various concerts and clinics given by several, internationally-known tuba and euphonium performers.
Senior music education major Jason Eckford, euphonium, assisted Dr. Coker with preparation of musical examples for "A Pedagogical Guide to Selected Tuba Excerpts from the Orchestral Repertoire." In March of 2007, materials from this project were included as part of the "30 Minutes A Day to Win Auditions" lecture given by Edward Jones (Principal tubist, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra) and Donald Little (Regents Professor of Music-Tuba at The University of North Texas) at the South-Central Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Austin, Texas.
