Mid-Continent
Consortium for International Education
Founded in 1997, the Mid-Continent
Consortium counts as its members eleven institutions
of higher education in Tennessee and Kentucky: Austin
Peay State University, Carson-Newman College, Lambuth
University, Lipscomb University, The University of Louisville,
The University of Memphis, Tennessee State University,
Tennessee Tech University, Union University, The University
of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and The University of Tennessee
at Martin. The
Consortium intends to offer students at member universities
study abroad programs which will deepen their understanding
foreign cultures and languages. At present, the Consortium
sponsors immersion programs each summer at theUniversité du
Québec à Chicoutimi(3 & 5
weeks), and theUniversidad
de Guanajuato, Mexico(4 weeks).
It plans to open a similar program in Spain (at the University
of Castilla - La Mancha in Toledo)
by the summer of 2008. All programs will feature three
essential components which will enable participants to
maximize their learning experience and to learn to communicate
with ease in their target language: (1) Rigorous language
and culture courses offered by our partner institutions
abroad and taught by native speakers on their staff; (2)
a homestay in families who are residents of the host countries;
and (3) various supplementary cultural activities and excursions. As
part of the admission requirements, students sign a pledge
that they will communicate in the target language only
for the duration of their program.
