Smith was named Williamson All-American as a fullback in 1962, concluding an outstanding four-year career. He was the team’s most valuable back for three seasons.
He led the Volunteer State Conference two seasons in rushing. He was an all-conference selection three times and was third among the state’s colleges and universities with total points scored in 1960. He also lettered in baseball one year.
After graduation, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam flying single engine attack jets.
