Robert Carroll is the winningest coach in UT Martin football history. Carroll, who played quarterback/runningback for the UTJC Vols before a successful career as quarterback at the University of Wyoming, coached UT Martin to 85 victories and four ties in 18 years from 1957 to 1974. Carroll's 1967 team compiled a record of 10-1 and defeated West Chester State in the Tangerine Bowl 25-6, UT Martin's only bowl appearance. Carroll was an Academic All-American selection at Wyoming and guided the 1956 Wyoming team to a victory over Texas Tech in the Sun Bowl.
As a player at UTJC, Carroll was selected the team's most valuable player in 1952 and captain and most valuable player in 1953. As a coach at UT Martin, Carroll coached nine small college All-Americans, two academic All-Americans, and 16 players that signed professional football contracts.
