Respondus LockDown Browser Student Quick Start Guide

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a secure browser for taking tests in Blackboard or Canvas. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during a test. If a test requires Respondus LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take a test with a standard web browser.

If you are required to use Respondus to take exams in Blackboard, your instructor will let you know.

Instructions for Students

  • Close all programs, unless one is used to connect you to the Internet (such as a program from your internet provider that maintains the connection)
  • Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it Mac users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder
  • If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging), choose „Yes‟ when prompted
  • Select the server needed to log into either Blackboard or Canvas
  • Login using your My UTMartin username and password
  • Navigate to the test and select it
  • In Blackboard, if the instructor requires a test password, a new window will appear asking for the Exam Password. Enter the password and click Begin Exam
  • The test will then start (Note: once a test has been started with Respondus Lockdown Browser, you cannot exit until the "Submit" button is clicked. If you do that, your test will be hung and you will have to contact your professor to clear it out so that you can re-take the test from the beginning.)
