The History Major

Besides the US, European, and World courses, the History offerings include two Methods courses. These Methods courses are foundational to the major and need to be taken in the proper sequence.

History and Historians (HIST 299) introduces you to historical research and writing methods, to historical interpretation, and  to historiography. This is a sophomore-level course required of History and Secondary Education History majors.

The Capstone Course (HIST 499), the senior seminar, focuses on writinga research paper not just for the course, but also for presentation at a regional Phi Alpha Theta history conference. The capstone course is a senior year course preferably taken during the fall semester to allow you to present papers at the spring conferences. This course perfects skills and knowledge that you have learned in your other history courses. Your senior research paper may be entered for best paper competitions here at UT Martin, and elsewhere. It may serve as a writing sample in your admission dossier to graduate school.
