In Honor of Professor Stan Sieber

The Department of History and Philosophy Has Established The Stan Sieber Student Travel Award

After 46 years of distinguished teaching at the University of Tennessee at Martin, Professor of History Stan Sieber retired in July 2013. For thirty of those years he “Extended the Walls” of UTM through travel study and study abroad programs. His commitment to developing and implementing multicultural global opportunities for UTM students, faculty, alumni, and area residents through domestic and international travel study and study abroad programs, enabled participants to combine exciting and challenging travel experiences with serious academic study.

Over some 31 years, Professor Sieber planned and coordinated more than 340 travel study and study abroad programs involving an estimated 3,750 participants. Moreover, Mr. Sieber personally directed 62 travel study programs in Europe with 745 UTM students, faculty, and members of the West Tennessee community.

These experiences included bus and train programs in Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Austria; and he drove the van during amazing travel study experiences in France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Lichtenstein, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The ultimate goal of the Stan Sieber Student Travel Award is to provide financial assistance to UTM students seeking personal enrichment and a broadly-based international perspective through academic travel. According to Professor Sieber, “The main benefit of travel study is that our students return to campus with a greater appreciation for other cultures, but, more importantly, a better understanding of the advantages they enjoy as citizens of the United States.”

This competitive award is funded by donations to the Stan Sieber Student Travel Award Gift Fund. The number given and amount of the award will be determined by the size of the fund. Once the award is funded, UTM students in good standing with at least a 2.85 grade point average may apply in the Department of History and Philosophy by submitting all requested materials, including an original essay. Each application will be evaluated by a committee selected by Professor Sieber and coordinated by the chair of the Department of History and Philosophy. Donor and application information will be available in the department office. For additional information please contact Dr. David Coffey at 731-881-7470 or dcoffey@utm.edu.
