Honors Core Curriculum

 

The Honors Core Curriculum is intended to enrich the undergraduate education of all students participating in Honors programs. All Honors students will complete a series of core courses created with their intellectual abilities and interests in mind.

 

All students participating in Honors Program are required to complete the Honors Core Curriculum. Normally, students would be required to complete Honors 111-112, one course in the first category below and three courses in the second (broader) category. As Honors 111 and 112 will not be offered during 2007-2008, students are required to take five courses in the second category. It is recommended that students complete all honors core courses by the end of the sophomore year.

Honors Core Curriculum Course Descriptions

Honors 111 Humanity in a Global Perspective (3). An interdisciplinary study of the relationships among the world's people and societies. Faculty from a variety of disciplines lecture and lead discussions on a theme chosen for the semester. International and cross-cultural relationships are studied from a wide range of academic perspectives. Active learning, critical thinking, writing and discussion skills are emphasized. Enrollment is limited to students in good standing in Honors Programs or by permission of instructor.

 

Honors 112 Humanity in a Social Perspective (3). An interdisciplinary study of the relationship between the individual and social institutions, including the role of cultural diversity. The course focuses on the social and cultural interactions of individuals and groups. Social dynamics are studied from a wide range of academic perspectives. A diverse range of faculty lecture and lead discussions on a theme chosen for the semester. Enrollment is limited to students in good standing in Honors Programs or by permission of instructor. Prerequisite: Honors 111 or permission of instructor.

 

English 111H-112H Honors English Composition (3,3). An introduction to written discourse for students with a minimum score of 28 on the English section of the Enhanced ACT. Primarily a skills course. To be taken in sequence.

 

Communications 230H Honors Public Speaking (3). An introduction to public discourse for students in good standing in Honors Programs. The course will include the intensive study and application of communication theory in the preparation and delivery of extemporaneous informative and persuasive speeches and in critical listening. Limited enrollment. Prerequisite: C or above in English 111 or English 111H.

 

Art 110H Honors Understanding Art (3). An introduction to the visual arts through studying terminology, history, theory, and criticism. For students in good standing in Honors Programs.

 

Chemistry 122H Honors General Chemistry (4). Elementary concepts and applications of the chemical sciences. Three lecture hours and one three-hour laboratory. For students in good standing in Honors Programs.

 

Dance 110H Honors Understanding Dance (3). A general survey of the development of dance as an art form from primitive times to the present. For students in good standing in Honors Programs.

 

English 250H Honors British Literary Tradition (3). The literature of Britain from its beginnings through the eighteenth century. Limited class size allowing in-depth discussions, projects, and presentations. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic quality.

 

English 251H Honors British Literary Tradition (3). The literature of Britain from the romantic period to the present. ENGL 251H may be taken before ENGL 250H. Limited class size allowing in-depth discussions, projects, and presentations. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic quality.

 

English 260H Honors American Literary Tradition (3). American literature from the pre-Colonial period through the Romantic period. Limited class size allowing in-depth discussions, projects, and presentations. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic quality.

 

English 261H Honors American Literary Tradition (3). American literature from the Realistic period to the present. ENGL 261H may be taken before ENGL 260H. Limited class size allowing in-depth discussions, projects, and presentations. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic quality.

 

Geology 110H Honors Introduction to Physical Geology (4). An examination of the composition and structure of the earth and its internal and surface processes with applications to the environment, natural resources and geologic hazards. Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory. This course is open to students who are participants in the Honors Program.

 

Geology 120H Honors Environmental Geology (4). The application of the principles of physical geology to environmental
problems, including pollution, natural hazards and resource production. Topics include: volcanic, earthquake, flood, and landslide hazards; surface and ground water pollution, economic resources and reserves including transportation, production, and use; and broader issues such as global warming. Three hours of lecture and two hours of lab. This course is open to students who are participants in the Honors Program.

 

History 121H Honors Development of World Civilization I (3). Traces forms of civilization from ancient beginnings through the 17th century. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic ability.

 

History 122H Honors Development of World Civilization II (3). Traces forms of civilization from beginning of 18th century to the present.. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic ability.

 

Music 111H Honors Masterpieces of Music (3). A survey of world masterpieces of music from the Baroque period to the present for students in good standing in Honors Programs.

 

Music 112H Honors Music In Our Time (3). A study of contemporary music in various cultures for students in good standing in Honors Programs. May not be used toward a major in Music.

 

Psychology 110H Honors Psychology (3). Introduction to the methods and findings in psychology with emphasis on the origins, research methods and goals of psychological science, biological foundations of behavior, sensation and perception, learning, memory and information processing, cognition, language, cognitive development, and social and personality development. Limited class size, extensive discussion, writing assignments, and research projects are featured. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic ability.

 

Psychology 120H Honors Psychology (3). Introduction to the methods and findings in psychology with emphasis on motivation and emotion, personality theories, psychological testing, psychopathology and therapy, attitudes and social perception, social relations, group influence, and altered states of consciousness. Limited class size, extensive discussion, writing assignments, and research projects are featured. Open to students who have demonstrated superior academic ability.

 

Theater 110H Honors Understanding Theater (3). A contemporary overview of theater as an art form. Introduction to the roles of the actor, director, designer. History and literature of the theater. Basic criticism. For students in good standing in Honors Programs.
