Academic Speakers

 

Roy Gutman is the foreign editor for McClatchy newspapers in Washington D.C.  Mr. Gutman has served as a foreign affairs journalist for over forty years with Newsday, Reuters, United Press International, and Newsweek.  His reporting has been honored with several prestigious awards, most notably the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting, for his reports on ethnic cleansing in Bosnia, including the first documented accounts of Serb-run concentration camps.  Mr. Gutman has authored several books, most recently How We Missed the Story: Osama Bin Laden, the Taliban, and the Hijacking of Afghanistan (2008).  This book will serve as the subject of his lecture, as he will speak on Osama bin Laden, the Taliban, and the Hijacking of Afghanistan on Monday, September 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Roy Gutman’s appearance is sponsored by Honors Programs.

 

Roy Van Arsdale is Professor of Geology at the University of Memphis.   A fellow of the Geological Society of America, Dr. Van Arsdale is a specialist in structural geology and geomorphology, with his research centering upon active tectonics within plate interiors.  He has published over 50 refereed journal articles, many of them concerned with the Mississippi River Valley and the New Madrid seismic zone.  His most recent work, Adventures Through Deep Time: The Central Mississippi River Valley and its Earthquakes was published in August 2009.  He will speak on The Past and Possible Future of the New Madrid Seismic Zone on Monday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Roy Van Arsdale’s appearance is sponsored by Honors Programs.

 

Alberto Gonzales served as the 80th Attorney General of the United States under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2007.  After receiving his law degree from Harvard University, Mr. Gonzales joined the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in Houston.  He entered government in 1995 as General Counsel to Texas Governor George W. Bush, before serving as Texas Secretary of State and as a Justice of the Texas Supreme Court.  Following President Bush to Washington, Mr. Gonzales served as White House Counsel before his appointment as Attorney General.   He will share his experiences in Living Legal History: Working with the White House, the Department of Justice and the Supreme Court on Thursday, October 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Skyhawk Arena of the Elam Center .  Alberto Gonzales’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs, the College of Business and Global Affairs, the Department of Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Political Science, the Office of Student Life, and First Year Initiative.

 

Ted Mosch is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Tennessee at Martin.  Among the finest and most widely honored educators in the history of the university, Dr. Mosch received numerous awards for teaching and service and was the University of Tennessee National Alumni Distinguished Professor from 1996 until his retirement in 2002.  Dr. Mosch was also richly decorated during his years of service in the United States Army Reserves, in which he achieved the rank of colonel.  He has a record of extensive international travel, including visits to Russia and Eastern Europe, Germany, China, Vietnam, Cuba, and North Korea.  He will speak on A Look at North Korea on Monday, November 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Ted Mosch’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Department of Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Political Science.

 

Julie Stackhouse is Senior Vice President and Managing Officer of Banking Supervision and Discount Window Lending at the Federal Reserve Bank in St. Louis.  She has served in several of the Federal Reserve districts and was Vice President of the Federal Reserve Banks in Kansas City and Minneapolis before assuming her current position in St. Louis. She will speak on From Crisis to Recovery: The Reshaping of the Financial and Regulatory System on Thursday, February 4 at 7;30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Julie Stackhouse’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs, the Horace and Sara Dunagan Chair of Excellence in Banking, and the Department of Accounting, Finance, Economics, and Political Science.

 

Michelle Merwin is Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee at Martin.  Dr. Merwin has numerous publications and presentations to her credit and has a solid record of service to the community and university, including her service as Interim Chair of the Department of Psychology from 2007 to 2009.  She received the UTM Cunningham Teacher/Scholar Award in 2009 .  Dr. Merwin will speak on Lincoln’s Destiny and Will: The Writings of Rollo May Visible in the Life of the Great Emancipator on Thursday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Michelle Merwin’s appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Department of Behavioral Sciences.

 

Julien Clinton Sprott is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.  A versatile and prolific scholar, Dr. Sprott has published over three hundred articles and six books.  Among the latter, his latest, Physics Demonstrations: A Sourcebook for Teachers of Physics (2006), relates to one of his most significant interests, the promotion of scientific education in general, and physics in particular, among the general public.  He will speak on Wonders of Physics on Friday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Julien Clinton Sprott will also be the conference speaker for the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting on the UTM campus..

 

Robert Peoples is Director of the American Chemical Society’s Green Chemistry Institute.  He has worked for several decades in the carpet industry and has been at the forefront of the establishment of standards and sustainability in the industry.  Dr. Peoples served as Sustainability Director for the Carpet & Rug Institute, Executive Director of The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), and President of the Environmental Group.  He will speak on Sustainability and Innovation in the Carpet Industry on Tuesday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center.  Robert Peoples is also the 2009 Sigma Xi Banquet Speaker.

 

The lectures conclude with a brief question and answer period.  All lectures are free and the public is invited to attend.
