TIEP Students Love to Travel

Chie, Miu-Miu, Alex, Yuka & Chisa visit downtown Paducah, Kentucky.

Travel in English!

This summer a group of students delayed the urge to shop and instead visited the historic downtown riverfront area of Paducah, Kentucky. With the help of chauffer, photographer Mr. Frank Leach, the students had a fun-filled trip! Just look at these photos...

A recent survey of TIEP students revealed that what they most want to do is travel and meet lots of people to speak English with. Mami Miyake, a student from Hirosaki, Japan, decided to to take a side trip with her parents and grandmother to the Grand Canyon. See photos. The Grand Canyon is easily accessible from Las Vegas, Nevada. Flights to Las Vegas are very affordable and there are busses from the city to various areas in the region.

New Intensive 2-week ESL seminar

One of our newly arrived students recently requested a short, but intensive ESL seminar and we listened! TIEP now offers an optional two week ESL program that takes place during our normal break time. Topics for courses are determined by participant requests. Summer 2004 TIEP offered English Through Movies and Music, Reading and Writing about Local Travel, English Via Games, and others generated by students. The two-week course is four hours per day with several instructors and is designed to help students learn English as quickly as possible with an emphasis on fun. At TIEP we feel you learn a second language the fastest while enjoying yourself! The Summer 2004 offering cost $500. The two-week seminar can only be offered when a minimum of six students participate.

Hirosaki Students Visit Martin

American students visited Hirosaki, Japan earlier this year with chaperones.

Eighteen Japanese junior high-school students accompanied by five of their teachers from Hirosaki City visited Martin for a week this summer. The students had English classes, a weekend homestay with the families of their junior high-school American partners, a field trip to Reelfoot Lake and Dyersburg, as well as several gatherings. They visited the Martin Middle School and attended a welcome reception, swimming party, banquet and farewell gathering. This visit is part of an on-going exchange program between Hirosaki and Martin, Tennessee. A group of American students from Martin recently returned from a visit to Hirosaki with wonderful memories of international travel and cross-cultural exchange.

Letter from TIEP Alumnus Eriko in Hiroshima, Japan

Dear TIEP teachers!

I am Eriko Sasaki and I used to study at TIEP in 1998. I hope you are all doing well. I just found mail has arrived from you and started thinking of you all. I heard the sad news about Dr. Eisterhold after I came back to Hiroshima. My heart was aching very badly. I hope his family is doing well. After I came back to Japan, I finished my undergraduate degree and became an English teacher at a junior high school in Hiroshima. I enjoyed teaching there for three years. Last year I got married in a Japanese traditional way at a shrine in Hiroshima. My husband is German, working as a chemistry researcher in Japan. I hope to hear from you what is going on in Martin, my loving town. Thank you very much for all of your love and care while I was in Martin.

Please take care.

With a lot of appreciation.

Eriko (Sasaki) Uehlin

UT Martin and TIEP Get New Telephone Numbers

Because of a need to upgrade the telephone system on the University of Tennessee at Martin campus there will be a change in all of the telephone numbers. The old number for the Office of International Programs was 731-881-7340. The new number is 731-881-7340. Notice that all of the numbers with 587 prefix on campus have changed to an 881 prefix. Any telephone numbers of houses and businesses in Martin are not affected, only university telephone numbers. So, the new FAX number for the Office of International Programs is 731-881-7322. We are in the process of updating the telephone numbers on the TIEP web site in its many languages.
