Martha Ochoa & StudentsInternational Week 2008 |
|
Professor Ochoa is here to implement her sabbatical project made possible under an agreement between UT Martin and her home university. When asked what she likes most about Martin, she said, “People are really nice.” |
Visiting Professor Martha Ochoa has come to UT Martin from her home university in Saltillo, Mexico, La Universidad Autonoma Agraria “Antonio Narro” as part of an exchange program between the two universities. She is teaching Spanish for the Department of Modern Foreign Languages at UT Martin and participating in TIEP courses while in Martin. In the photo she is with her Spanish students who participated in preparing food from Mexico for UT Martin’s International Week. She teaches Human Resource Administration as well as English when needed at her university in Mexico.
|
She says that she would like to invite professors from UT Martin to her university to help train others in these areas and to help Mexican students prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language. She adds that this cross-cultural exchange is part of the agreement between the two universities. She is certain that Mexican students in her English classes at home would feel more confident in their English with and welcome an American professor teaching them. She would also like to invite American students to come to her university and reassuringly adds, “Many Mexican professors speak English and there are many people who want to help students feel comfortable.” |
“TIEP has helped me significantly. It was useful for the career I chose and helped me develop new skills like writing in English.” |
TIEP Alumnus Graduation
Andrea Sudario Guerra from Ecuador has graduated from La Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil with a major in Ingenería en Gestión empresarial internacional, a degree in International Business. You might remember Andrea if you were at TIEP in the late 1990s when she attended several terms while still in high school. She now works for the Guayaquil chapter of BASC Ecuador, a business alliance for secure commerce. Andrea recently wrote to tell us, “TIEP has helped me significantly. It was useful for the career I chose and helped me develop new skills like writing in English.” Because language skills are very important in her career, Andrea feels that the English she learned at TIEP enabled her to get a job and work that she enjoys. In the future, she hopes to work for a multinational company in international business and marketing. We are very proud of you Andrea! Congratulations from everyone at TIEP! |

Yoshikazu Arima (middle)Wrestles with Neighbors! |
|
This past summer several TIEP and UTM alumni returned to Martin for visits with former teachers, town friends, and co-workers. One of those was Yoshikazu Arima who brought his family in order for his two children to see where he had studied intensive English. Naho and Ryosei, the Arimas' daughter and son, were able to play and chase their first squirrels through the campus quadrangle. They also had a chance to dance to the rhythm of the UTM Skyhawk Marching Band's percussion ensemble at the Fine Arts building. During a traditional shopping trip to Martin's Wal-Mart, Arima was able to find UTM t-shirts large enough to fit some of his sumo wrestler neighbors. Yoshikazu and his wife Char were able to make their visit to Martin and Florida before going to New York City where they met with the New York Yankees' baseball player Hideki Matsui, one of Arima's more famous clients. After studying in TIEP in 1981-82, Yoshikazu had to transfer in order to begin his studies in Athletic Training which was not offered at UTM at that time. |
||
Later, after completing his studies and certification, he returned to Japan. He presently is self-employed in Tokyo, where he is a private trainer for several individuals and noted athletes in a variety of sports fields. |
Since Yoshikazu's time of study at UTM, there have been several international students who have been able to receive their degree in Athletic Training from UTM. Arima has served as a role-model of how serious professional training can be of use and benefit to many. |
