Library Departments - Periodicals

The Library subscribes to approximately 1600 Periodical titles which are in 5 locations:

  • CURRENT PERIODICALS 1st floor. The current, unbound issues of most titles are kept in a browsing collection on the 1st Floor. Once these are bound they are shelved on the 2nd floor. Locations for all titles are available on the OPAC.
  • SECOND FLOOR Periodicals shelves. All titles are shelved by call number.
  • Steven E. Rogers Media Center. All Microfilm and Microfiche title holdings are located in Media, where machines are available to view and make copies from the film.
  • STORAGE. Titles no longer received and some older volumes of current titles are shelved in the storage area. Reference will retrieve these volumes on request. Storage items are available 8 am-5 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • WEST TENNESSEE HERITAGE CENTER. Titles dealing with Tennessee history and genealogy are located in the Tennessee Room.

PERIODICALS DO NOT CIRCULATE.

Holdings information on individual titles, including the latest received, is available on the Library OPAC (search by "Periodicals"). The entry will show UTM's holdings and the location in the library for each title. If the title you want does not appear in the OPAC, ask for help at the Reference Desk.

ABSTRACTS from approximately 5,000 periodicals in the various Ebsco databases can be searched on the OPAC. Searches can be made by Keyword, Author, Title, Subject, and Journal title. Most titles available in the UTM Library are indicated on each article entry.

Indexing and abstracts are also available from more than 10 databases on FirstSearch, which is available through the Electronic Databases page.

The full text of many periodical articles is available on various subject databases and the Tennessee Electric Library (TEL). You may connect from any campus computer through the Library homepage. From the Library Catalog click on the Electronic Database's button. This will take you to an information screen where you may select the database that you want. You may search by subject or by publication. Off-campus access is available through the Library's Proxy Server. ID & Password are required.
