What are the prerequisite courses?

Financial Accounting and Statistics & Probability. Courses in these areas are required. Typically, these courses or their equivalents will be listed on your transcript that you submit for admission. If you haven’t had one or more of these courses, you simply complete them within your first 2 semesters of the MBA program.

Do I have to take an admissions exam (e.g., GMAT, GRE)?

Not necessarily. If you have previously earned a Master's degree, then you do not have to take an admissions exam. OR, if you have 7+ years of full-time professional business experience demonstrating progressive responsibility after having earned your bachelor's degree and your undergraduate GPA was a 3.0 or higher, your admission test may be able to be waived. Students can submit a GMAT Waiver Application for consideration once all other admissions materials have been submitted to Graduate Studies.

  • You can take the GMAT (minimum GMAT score is typically 450).
  • You can take the GRE Revised General Test

What materials do I need in order to apply?

  • Online MBA: You will need a completed application, $30 application fee, all official transcripts, an official GMAT or GRE score, a current resume, three letters of reference, admissions essay, and at least two years of professional work experience.
  • Hybrid MBA: You will need a completed application, $30 application fee, all official transcripts, an official GMAT or GRE score, admissions essay, a current resume, and three letters of reference.

How long will it take to complete my degree?

Our cohorts graduate usually around 18 months.

Do I have to come to campus?

  • Students in our Online Program do not have to come to campus. Students in this program are part of a cohort taking courses that are 100% online.
  • Students in our Hybrid Program come to campus a maximum of 5 Saturdays each Fall and Spring, no matter how many classes they take each semester. Students will also combine hybrid courses with purely online courses.

No, it will have no indication that you completed your degree online/hybrid or otherwise.

What is the normal course load?

  • Students in the Online Program will typically take two courses per semester with total hours ranging from 6-8. Each course runs for about 6-8 weeks, so you usually take one course at a time.
  • Students in the Hybrid MBA Program can anywhere from 1-5 classes per semester (1 hour-12 hours). The Hybrid Program is not cohort-based, so students can pace themselves.

No, you do not have to have a background in business, but you will need to take the prerequisite courses if not completed in your undergraduate work.

Issues to consider prior to applying

 

Is my employer paying for my MBA wherein there is a maximum number of hours I can take per term? This is common; many firms will only pay for 1 course/term. This doesn’t necessarily have to impact your options, but the MBA office needs to know upon admission if this is a situation that applies to you. Pacing students slower than the cohort schedules is possible, but ideally, we would be able to account for this upon admission as there is a cap to the cohort size admitted.

 

Can I miss Hybrid classes as I may have missed my undergrad class meetings? In short, no. Class meetings are required. We do allow 1 pre-approved by professor, relevant excused absence per term. Appropriate paperwork, documentation and pre-approval is required.

 

Is there a cost difference between the 2 options? Minimal. There is a nominal fee difference in the 2 options. Information can be found at http://www.utm.edu/departments/bursar/tuition.php

Hybrid MBA Program

The Hybrid MBA program offered through the College of Business and Global Affairs is open to anyone holding a bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, regardless of undergraduate major. Students complete their coursework through a combination of online and hybrid courses. Students can select either the General MBA or MBA with Agricultural Option.
