Young Scholars Academy - Curriculum

THREE AREAS OF THE CURRICULUM
Throughout the Academy, students will be exposed to three distinct learning environments:

SPECIAL APTITUDE DEVELOPMENT
About two-thirds of the students’ class time will be in an area of special aptitude. The Young Scholars Academy will offer offer the following special aptitude courses: Biology, Philosophy, Religion, Political Science, English, Literature, Health Sciences, Nursing, Communications, Economics and Education. Students will be enrolled in two special aptitude areas.

PERSONAL & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
These activities are designed to foster the personal and social development necessary for the students to benefit fully from their Academy experience. In a setting that integrates all the academic classes and events, the curriculum seeks to inspire a student’s understanding of his or her own personal potential. Some of the activities students will be exposed to will include insight into potential career assessment. These instruments will be used in counseling the individual students about potential paths they can take in their collegiate careers.

COLLEGE/MAJOR EXPLORATION
Each college at the University of Tennessee at Martin has been given the opportunity to design interactive activities that will allow YSA students to see first hand the career paths that are available for majors within their division. A group of administrators and/or professionals will assist students with career options through networking in a social but professional setting. Students will have the chance to see what majors are available to them and will get a better idea of what certain disciplines offer their graduates. It also provides an opportunity for students to ask questions about career opportunities and long-term benefits and potential for graduates of a particular field of study. This environment will also include a short session involving the ACT Prep course.

YOUNG SCHOLARS ACADEMY ENVIRONMENT
The residential character of the Young Scholars Academy is essential to its aims and purposes. Students will not be permitted to leave the campus, except for any planned field trip(s), during the one week period (There will be no exceptions to this policy).

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS
The educational experience of the Young Scholars Academy will be enriched by other components beyond the classroom curriculum, which may include: guest speakers, films, social/recreational activities and student performances/programming.
