Dr. Nola Jones

Dr. Nola Jones is the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music
Education at the University of Tennessee at Martin where her responsibilities
include conducting the UTM Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, serving as
director of the Skyhawk Marching Band and Pep Band, teaching undergraduate
courses in conducting and music education, and serving as a member of the
UTM Faculty Senate. Prior to her appointment at UT Martin, she served as the
Associate Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music Education at
Northern Arizona University. At Northern Arizona University Dr. Jones’
assignments included directing the Lumberjack Marching and Pep Bands,
conducting the Symphonic Band, supervising student teachers, and teaching
undergraduate conducting and methods classes. Additionally she served as
Director of the NAU Summer Music Camps. A native of Mississippi, Dr. Jones
has enjoyed a successful career as a middle school and high school band director
in Mississippi and Tennessee. During her public school tenure Dr. Jones’ bands
were recognized for their achievements in concert, sight-reading, and marching
including performing in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, three Bands of
America Regional Championships, and the John Philip Sousa Foundations’
prestigious Sudler Shield of Excellence.


Dr. Jones maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and
clinician for concert bands, marching bands, and honor ensembles, including the
US Army Field Band. She has appeared nationally in 38 of the United States and
internationally in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and Singapore. At the request
of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, she was the Director of
the 2010 and 2011 US Army All-American Band, performing at the NBC televised
US Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas and served on its Blue
Ribbon Committee to write National Standards for Marching Band. Dr. Jones
has been a featured presenter at state music education conventions in Arizona,
Louisiana, Mississippi, and North Carolina. She has held positions on the
Executive Board of Middle Tennessee State Band and Orchestra Association and
as a state chair for the National Band Association. Dr. Jones\' professional
affiliations include Music Educators National Conference, Tennessee Music
Educators Association, Tennessee Bandmasters Association, West Tennessee
School Band and Orchestra Association, National Band Association, College
Band Directors National Association, Phi Beta Mu, Sigma Alpha Iota, Tau Beta
Sigma, and Kappa Kappa Psi. Dr. Jones actively adjudicates for Drum Corps
International, Bands of America, and Winter Guard International, having judged
numerous Regional, National, and World Championships for these
organizations. She is currently serving on the Drum Corps International Music
Judge Liason Committee.


Dr. Jones received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi State
University and the Master of Music Education degree from Mississippi College.
She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in wind band conducting from the
University of South Carolina where she was a student of Dr. William J. Moody
