Professor Matthew Stratton joined the faculty of the music department at the University of Tennessee at Martin in the fall of 2010. He serves as the Assistant Director of Bands and Director of The UTM UNDERSOUND Tuba and Euphonium Studio. Prior to his appointment, Stratton was a music teacher in the Monroe County Community School Corporation of Bloomington IN. In his nineyear career, he taught high school and middle school band, middle school orchestra, middle school choir, and elementary general music. During this tenure, he received the nomination of three students to the Who's Who Among Americas Teachers publication.

 

Stratton earned the Bachelor of Music Education and Performers Certificate from the State University of New York College at Fredonia. He holds the MM Tuba Performance and is ABD towards the DM Brass Pedagogy Tuba with minor areas of Jazz Studies and Music Education from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.

 

Stratton has participated in DCI as a marching member of the Patriots and The Cadets. He was the Brass Caption Head for the Patriots who earned the Silver Medal in DCI Open Class during the 2003 Season. He has taught Magic of Orlando and most recently The Blue Stars. Stratton is in constant demand as a clinician and consultant for the marching arts. He is often invited to guest conduct and adjudicate for local, regional, and national associations.

 

Stratton has played his tuba in forty eight states, and throughout Canada. He has performed at the Opening Ceremonies of The World Cup Soccer Tournament , The Major League Baseball All Star Game, and the Closing Ceremonies of the 1996 Summer Olympic Games. He was a founding member and principal tuba of the Southern Indiana Wind Ensemble, as well as, a regular performer with TUBASANTAS AND TUBACOMPANY under the direction of Harvey Phillips. He has performed as principal tuba with the Columbus, Evansville, Owensboro, and Jackson Symphony Orchestra's. He is a member of the UT Martin faculty brass quintet and will begin playing this fall in a newly formed tuba euphonium quartet as yet to be named. Stratton has commissioned several works for solo tuba and tuba euphonium quartet. He is in the process of cultivating a library of Basketball Band arrangements that are being considered for publication.

 

Professor Stratton is a member of Music Educators National Conference, International Tuba Euphonium Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity. His primary teachers are Don Burke, C. Rudolph Emilson, Russel Mikkelson, Harvey Phillips and Daniel Perantoni.

 

Professor Stratton performs exclusively on Perantucci equipment.
