Student Accomplishments

UTM Percussion Studio

The University Singers will perform Carl Orff's Carmina Burana this March.


The UTM Percussion Studio Performed on the main stage at the Martin Soybean Festival on September 5, 2013.


Kerry Durso (Music Education, Fall, 2013) was a recipient of the Carl Seale Teaching Award on December 5, 2013. This award is given to the top two student teachers from across the university each semester.


Members of the UT Martin Percussion Studio competed in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention's Individuals and Group Percussion Competitions as part of PASIC in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 14, 2013.


Placing were:

2nd Place Multiple Percussion Solo, Jerry Emmons (Sophomore, Music Performance Major, Selmer, TN)

3rd Place Multiple Percussion Solo, Brandon Blankenstein (First Year Music Education Major, Johnson City, TN)


Honorable mention:

6th place Solo Marimba, Justin Lee, (Sophomore, Music Education Major, Clarksville, TN)




Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Elaine Harriss, professor and chair, was named an MTNA Foundation Fellow by the Music Teachers National Association at the 2013 MTNA Conference.


Dr. Elaine Harriss is president of the Tennessee Association of Music Executives in Colleges and Universities.


Dr. Elaine Harriss is a past president of the Tennessee Music Teachers Association and the Tennessee Federation of Music Clubs.


Dr. Julie Hill has been elected to the position of Second Vice President of the Percussion Arts Society. Her term will begin January 1, 2013. She currently serves as Secretary of the organization.


Student Accomplishments

Jennifer Reeves, Cindy Morris, and Daniel Houston were nominated for Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities for 2012.


New Pacer Singers took their 8th annual concert tour in January 2012, this time to Norfolk, Virginia, Baltimore Maryland, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and New York City.


The Four Stikx Clarinet Quartet will tour Thailand in May/June of 2012 as part of a travel study. They will perform and work with faculty at Mahidol University in Bangkok, and will travel to Chaing Mai to work with school children in refugee orphanages.


Katherine Felthauser competed in the 2012 WGI World Championship Ensemble, Music City Mystique.


Tommy Sam competed in the 2012 WGI Independent World group, Gateway.


Katie McClain was the 2012 recipient of $1000 scholarship to the Percussive Arts Society.


Doug Young is a member of the 2012 Rosemont Cavaliers.


Joseph Agee and Robert Elam are members of the 2012 Boston Crusaders.


On November 1, 2012, UT Martin Junior Music Education Major, Josh Spaulding, competed in the Percussive Arts Society International Marimba Competition in Austin, Texas.Spaulding placed 6th in the competition which included university students of all levels including masters and doctoral candidates.Josh performed Chameleon by French composer Eric Sammut.


Faculty Accomplishments

Dr Jessie Thoman will be a faculty member at the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival in Prague in summer 2012 (www.ameropa.org)


Dr. Jessie Thoman is a member of Mirari Brass Quintet, a professional touring group.


Student Accomplishments

Erin Ison, Instrumental Music Education Major (graduated Dec. '11) won the Carl Seale Teaching Award given to the 2 most outstanding student teachers at the university across all disciplines.


ACS Quintet toured the north island of New Zealand in May 2011 as part of a travel study. They performed at the New Zealand School of Music as part of a saxophone festival, and worked with school children in rural areas all over the country.


Andrew Moore and Victoria Russell participated in the Tennessee Music Teachers Association collegiate state level piano auditions in November 2011.


Joshua Spaulding's 2011 composition premiered with UTM clarinet ensemble on their single reed concert. Joshua Spaulding competed in the 2011 International PAS marimba solo competition.


Rachel Steiner and Tommy Sam were participants in the 2011 Phantom Regiment.


Kerry Durso participated in the 2011 Winter Guard International Finals.


Colby Snider was accepted to 2011 Leith Howard Stevens Summer Marimba and Vibraphone Seminar, New Jersey.


Hamilton Moore was the 2011 UTM Concerto Competition Winner.


The Percussion Ensemble performed a concert at the 2011 TMEA State Conference.


Robert Elam is a member of the 2011 Boston Crusaders.


The UTM choirs perform with the 2011 Jackson Symphony with Dr. Mancusi soloist in Beethoven's Symphony No. 9


Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Julie Hill is a member of the Caixa Percussion Trio (Awarded Drum Magazine's Percussion Ensemble of the Year for 2011)


Dr. Amy Simmons with Dr. Julie Hill premiered two works at the ClarinetFest 2011 in Los Angeles.


Dr. Roberto Mancusi performed in London at St. Martin in the Fields 2011.


Dr. Julie Hill received the 2011 Cunningham Teacher/Scholar Award.


Dr. Amy Simmons received the UT 2011 National Alumni Association Teaching Award.


Friends of Music

Friends of Music sponsors concerts, guest artists, and educational events on campus, provides scholarships for deserving music students and enhances the musical life of UT Martin students.
