Jana Dickey Hudson

What are you doing now?

After gradation from UT Martin in 2009, I attended Auburn University where I earned a master's degree in education in 2011. I am currently employed as a professional school counselor in the Murfreesboro, TN area. I provide academic, career, and social/emotional counseling to high school students. My future career goal may involve higher education.

How did UTM Psychology Program help you achieve what you have become?

UTM is an outstanding university, I truly cherish the time I spent there. UTM Psychology helped me in so many ways. The quality of the classes could not have been better. I had the opportunity to actually know my professors and my cohort. Through that, I have developed a vast professional network, which has been very helpful. The program was challenging and supportive. Looking back, I can remember instances in many classes that lead me to wanting a career in school counseling. Participating with research teams, Psi Chi, professional organizations, and volunteering all helped to expand my knowledge of the field. I will forever be grateful to UTM for the opportunities that were presented to me.

What advice would you give to students who are thinking about becoming UTM psychology majors?

There are so many opportunities for Psychology majors. It is a very versatile field. You get exposure to many different types of psychology, which helps to identify career goals. Psychology is beneficial to everyone because it is everywhere. Graduate school is often necessary for related jobs in the career field. UTM helped me with that process as well by working with me to plan out my career path.
