Welcome to the 2017 Adolphe Sax Birthday Celebration website! Studio D is excited to host the 6th annual Adolphe Sax-O-Palooza Birthday Celebration on November 19th at 5 PM in the Harriet Fulton Theater of the Fine Arts Building at UTM!

In addition to all the wonderful musical offerings you have come to expect from the Adolphe Sax Birthday Celebration, we are adding two new features. The High School Chamber Competition is specifically geared toward students who are already playing in chamber ensembles. We are also pleased to announce that for the first time, we are including a Junior Saxophone Ensemble for 6th, 7th and 8th graders!

On this website, you will find all of the important information (event registration, directions, schedules, part assignments, music) to help us make this the best Adolphe Sax Birthday Celebration yet!

Admission is $5 for this event, but registered participants attend and perform for FREE! Registration will be open until at 11:59 on Friday, October 13th.

Questions about this event may be directed to Dr. Douglas Owens - dowens14@utm.edu.

Blue and Orange Large Ensembles

As has become a tradition here at UTM, Adolphe Sax-O-Palooza showcases two mass saxophone ensembles (this year designated "Blue" and "Orange"). Blue Ensemble will rehearse both the Sunday before the event (11/12) as well as the day of (11/19) and perform two pieces. Orange Ensemble will rehearse the day of the event only and perform two different selections. Participants registered for Blue Ensemble will automatically be enrolled in Orange Ensemble for twice the fun!

Solo Competition

Audition Material: Students auditioning for the Solo Competition will select, record and submit a performance of a selection of saxophone repertoire from the standard solo literature (ex. Whitney Rhumba, Eccles Sonata) or from a solo folio (ex. Voxman Concert and Contest Collection, Larry Teal Solos for the Tenor Saxophone Player€). The recording does not need to include a pianist.

Submission of Materials: Audition material will be submitted through a video recording posted on a site like YouTube or through a file storage service like DropBox or Google Drive.

Performance: The winner will be invited to perform his or her selection on the 2017 Adolphe Sax Birthday Celebration Recital. If the winning selection has a collaborative piano part, the student may supply their own pianist for the performance. If the student is unable to supply a pianist, Dr. Owens will provide a reference. The winner of the Solo Competition must be present at and participating in the Adolphe Sax Birthday Celebration Recital; otherwise, the next runner up will be named winner.

Deadline for Submission: Hyperlinks to videos may be sent to Dr. Douglas Owens at dowens14@utm.edu. Audition materials must be submitted before 11:59 PM on Friday, October 13th.

High School Chamber Ensemble Competition

Note: This competition is intended for students who are already playing in a pre-existing saxophone ensemble. Information about the Honors Chamber Ensemble may be found below.

Honors Chamber Ensemble Information

Rehearsal Schedule: The 2017 Honors Chamber Ensemble will rehearse twice: Sunday, November 12th from 5 - 6 PM and Sunday, November 19th from 4:00 - 4:45 PM. Students must be present for both rehearsals in order to participate in this ensemble.

Audition Material: Your audition material should be something that showcases both lyrical and technical musicianship. This material may be selected from your regional honor band (All West, for example), two contrasting etudes, or a solo that contains contrasting styles or sections.

Note: Because of the necessity to fill parts in a chamber ensemble, strong preference will be given to students with access to and experience on multiple instruments of the saxophone family.

Submission of Materials: Audition material will be submitted through a video recording posted on a site like YouTube or through a file storage service like DropBox or Google Drive.
