Shannon received her B.S.N. at The University of Tennessee at Memphis. Her pre-professional curriculum was completed at The University of Memphis. After graduating in 1992, she worked at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis. There she worked with the bone marrow transplant patients first in inpatient care then in the ambulatory care clinic. While at St. Jude, Shannon participated in a nursing study of care of patients receiving T-Cell infusions following a bone marrow transplant. This research was published in the PONS journal. She worked at St. Jude until 1997 when she moved to Martin. After working in the home health field, she accepted her current position as Director of Student Health Services in January 2000.

Janis graduated from the Humphreys County Practical Nursing Program in 1969. Her nursing career has been very diversified as she has worked in medical clinics, pediatrician's office, private practices and home health care. She began her work at the University of Tennessee at Martin on a temporary basis in 1997, becoming a full time Senior LPN in August 1999.
