- Office of Public Safety Frequently Asked Questions
Do visitors need a permit to park on campus? Visitors should have a permit to park on campus. Visitors are subject to the regulations, ordinances, and laws pertaining to motor vehicles on the campus, and violations of such may result in a citation and/or towing of the vehicle. All visitors should obtain a visitor's permit from the Department of Public Safety. The permits are free of charge and can be obtained 24 hours a day. The visitor will need to know their license plate number to obtain the permit.
Do visitors need a permit to park on campus? All vehicles that are operated on campus by employees/students must be registered annually with the Department of Public Safety. These vehicles must have current valid parking stickers displayed. Parking stickers may be purchased at the Department of Public Safety at Crisp Hall between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The license plate number of the vehicle will be needed to be registered. Stickers are valid from September to August of the next year.
Parking regulations are in effect and are enforced 24 hours a day.
How often are tickets appealed? Tickets can be appealed by coming to the Department of Public Safety in Crisp Hall-Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm. The ticket needs to be appealed within two weeks after it is issued to avoid an additional late charge.
What makes a vehicle subject to be towed? If a vehicle receives more than 5 tickets within a semester, they are placed on a tow list and are subject to be towed if found to be in violation of the parking regulations. Vehicles may also be towed if found parked in designated tow zone lanes, or found to be parked in a manner that impedes the flow of traffic.
What if a student drives a different vehicle other than their registered one on a temporary basis or permanently changes vehicles? Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, the Office of Public Safety began issuing all parking stickers as transferrable "cling-on" stickers that can be easily removed from the windshield of a vehicle to be place in another vehicle if the student needs to do so.
How can I reach a student in an emergency if he or she is in class? Contact the Department of Public Safety at 1-731-881-7777 and we will attempt to locate the student and deliver the message.
How safe if the University of Tennessee at Martin? The University of Tennessee at Martin's crime rate is low compared to other same-sized Universities. We associate this with the high quality of students and staff we have at our University. We do encourage everyone totake precautions to protect themselves and their property. Information to assist them is provided during Freshmen Welcome Week in seminars conducted by members of the Department of Public Safety. Information is also made available to all in-coming Freshmen via a booklet entitled "Crime Awareness and Campus Safety." This will also inform them what to do if they become the victim of a crime.
What happens if my student has a medical emergency? The Department of Public Safety maintains a communications center 24 hours a day/365 days a year that fields all emergency calls that originate on campus. The communications center is in direct contact with Martin City and Weakley County EMS personnel and the normal emergency response time is less than 5 minutes. The local hospital is adjacent to the southwest border of the campus, thus is readily accessible.
What can I do to prepare my student in regards to campus safety? The most common legal problems associated with our students are difficulties associated with personal finances and the theft of their personal property. Insure your student is familiar with procedures involving credit/debit cards, checking accounts, and other financial matters to insure their accounts do not become overdrawn or limited out.
Remind your student to constantly maintain control of their personal property or insure it is secured when out of their control. Remind them to always lock their vehicles, room doors, lock drawers, or any other securable area, no matter how long they intend to be away. |
