Why is UTM a good fit for me?

UTM feels like a home away from home. The environment of the close-knit department allows a connection to everyone. You can truly grow as a musician and person here.

Michaela Johnson

Michaela Johnson is a junior music education major at UTM. Her primary instrument is the trumpet. She attended Westview High School and participated in All-West and the UTM Honor Band. At UTM, she has been a member of the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Big Band, University Singers, Marching Band, Trumpet Ensemble, Brass Choir and Martin Community Band. Michaela is a huge Harry Potter fan.

I chose UTM because of its affordability and small, intimate classes. On a smaller campus, the teachers have more time for individual students, and the professors here on campus (especially the music department) genuinely care about student success.

Michael Keenan

Michael Keenan is a senior music education major at UTM. His primary instrument is the trumpet. He attended McKenzie High School. At UTM, he has been a member of the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Big Band, University Singers, Marching Band, Trumpet Ensemble, and Brass Quintet. After graduation, Michael plans to obtain a Masters of Divinity and teach music. Michael is a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He also loves cats, “The Office,” and all things Harry Potter.

I chose UTM because of the Music Department, scholarship opportunities, and proximity to home. I have enjoyed my time here and will miss it greatly when I graduate!

Michael Larkin

Michael Larkin is a senior trumpet performance major at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Michael has played with numerous university ensembles, including the UTM Big Band, UTM Jazz Combo, UTM Brass Quintet, and UTM Wind Ensemble, in which he has previously held the position of principal chair trumpet. Past awards and honors include the John Philip Sousa award, the Marine Youth Foundation’s Semper Fidelis award, and being selected for the 2013 TMEA All-State Band and the 2016 TMEA Collegiate All-State Band.

Michael is also privately studying music composition under Dr. Michael Mathenia and instrumental conducting under Dr. John Oelrich. In the fall of 2016, he conducted two commissioned pieces for the UTM Contemporary Music Group.

“I believe UTM is a good fit for me because I enjoy working in a tight knit atmosphere of friends and colleagues. I believe in the power of having faculty that genuinely care about the musical, professional, and personal growth of each and every student, and every applied professor I have worked with has shown just that.”

Chloe Lollar

Chloe Lollar is a junior music education major from Friendship, TN. During her time at UTM, she has been part of Trumpet Ensemble, West Star Brass Band, Martin Community Band, Martin Community Jazz Band and is now an active musician in the Jazz Band, and Contemporary Music Group. She currently performs as principal trumpet in the UTM Wind Ensemble and trumpet section leader in the Skyhawk Marching Band. In her free time, she is the photographer for the UTM Chapter of Her Campus. When she graduates in 2019, she plans on becoming an elementary music teacher where she will further her love for music and teaching younger students.

I chose UTM because when I toured here my senior year of high school, it was the only college that felt welcoming and could be a potential home for me. The music faculty also played a huge role in my decision, as they are all amazing and willing to do whatever they can to help a student succeed.

Tucker Pounds

Tucker Pounds is a freshman music education major here at UTM. He graduated 3rd in his class from Obion County Central High School in Troy, Tennessee. He's been playing trumpet for 8 years and has participated in All-West, All-State, and UTM Honor Band and ChamberFest. Currently, he is in the Skyhawk Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Big Band, and Brass Choir. He has also started a barbershop quartet. His hobbies are barbershop singing, magic tricks, and bowling.

Why is UTM a good fit for me?

My parents came to school at UTM, and my dad teaches here now, so I've grown up around this campus. I love the environment at UTM where the faculty genuinely care about you. Even before I enrolled, the entire music faculty treated me like family. I really love being a student here.

Matthew (Matt) Scott

Matthew (Matt) Scott is a junior Music Education major from Covington, Tennessee, he is active in the UTM Wind Ensemble, UTM Marching band, UTM Big Band, Skyhawk Pep Band and West Star Brass Band. Matt has a fantastic high range, topping out at a double high C. When he graduates, he hopes to get a job teaching music to middle school students.

UTM feels like home. All of the music faculty knows my name and I feel like I could go to any of them for guidance. I really enjoy studying with trumpet professor, Dr. Gorman – he pushes me to be the best and doesn't expect any less.

Destinie Williams

Destinie Williams
I am Junior Music BA Major with a focus in History. I graduated from Jackson Central Merry in Jackson, TN with honors. My love for Music began in the 6th grade. I am currently in UTM Marching and Concert Band. I hope to expand my love and knowledge in music further here at Martin.

UTM is a good fit for me because it feels like home. What I appreciate the most is that the professors actually care about my future. I’m glad I choose UTM as my home.
