Prospective Students

UTM offers three options to become a music major as well as an option to become a music minor. All degree options require a successful audition into the Department of Music and the Tuba Euphonium Studio (more information can be found below). Please click on the headings below to gather information about auditioning to become a music major at UTM.

Music Minor

  • Requires an audition for entrance into the program as stated below.
  • There is no barrier exam to pass into upper division lessons
  • Upon completion of the program the student should be able to demonstrate command of their instrument by playing repertoire similar to that listed on page 10 in the Curriculum Guide.

Bachelor of Arts in Music (BAM)

  • Requires an audition for entrance into the program as stated below.
  • There is no barrier exam to pass into upper division lessons.
  • Upon completion of the BAM degree the student should be able to demonstrate command of their instrument by playing repertoire similar to that listed on page 13 and/or 15 in the Curriculum Guide.

Bachelor of Music – Education (BME)

  • Requires an audition for entrance into the program as stated below.
  • There is a barrier exam to pass into upper division lessons. Samples of this repertoire may be found in the Curriculum Guide on page 11.
  • Upon completion of the BAM degree the student should be able to demonstrate command of their instrument by playing repertoire similar to that listed on page 15 in the Curriculum Guide.

  • Requires an audition for entrance into the program as stated below.
  • There is a barrier exam to pass into upper division lessons. Samples of this repertoire may be found in the Curriculum Guide on page 11.
  • Upon completion of the BAM degree the student should be able to demonstrate command of their instrument by playing repertoire similar to that listed in page 15 on the Curriculum Guide.

Schedule an Audition

Apply to Audition. March 1st is the deadline to audition and receive full consideration for music scholarships.

 

Contact your prospective studio professor to schedule an audition if no audition date on the online audition form fits your schedule.

Auditioning for the Studio

UTM offers three options as a music major: Bachelors of Music in Education, Bachelors of Music in Performance, and Bachelors of Arts in Music. All three of these degree options require a successful audition into the Department of Music and the Tuba Euphonium Studio.

Euphonium

Applicants must prepare the following:

  • All major scales (2 octaves)
  • Chromatic scale, demonstrating the length of your range
  • One solo piece (or one movement of a multi-movement work, see suggested literature below)
  • 1 etude contrasting in style to the solo (see suggested books below)
  • Possible sight reading
  • Please contact Dr. Bill Waterman (wwaterma@utm.edu) to set up an audition and discuss meeting for a preliminary lesson

UTM Honor Band

Honor Band

The UTM Honor Band is a great tradition enriched in musical excellence consisting of over 700 applicants of young musicians yearly from the states of Tennessee and Kentucky. The Honor Band serves as an outstanding place to meet other tuba/euphonium players and perform alongside them. ChamberFest

Chamber Fest

Committed to chamber music UTM offers a weekend festival of music making for highly qualified high school students. ChamberFest is an audition event which invites typically 2 euphoniums and 2 tubas for the Tuba Quartet and then an additional tuba to play in the brass quintet. The festival takes place from Thursday afternoon until a concert on Saturday around the lunch hour. For more information on how to apply visit the ChamberFest information page.
