UT Martin Academic Speaker To Focus On Domestic And International Terrorism

Martin, Tennessee - Dan T. Carter, an author and history professor currently completing a book exploring the roots of far-right political terrorism in late twentieth century America, will lecture Monday, Feb. 4 at the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Carter, an Educational Foundation Professor of History at the University of South Carolina, will present the lecture "The Road to Oklahoma City: How Some Americans Come to Hate their National Government" at 7:30 p.m. in the Boling University Center's Watkins Auditorium. In light of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Carter will also include remarks on international terrorism, comparing the motives of domestic and international terrorists.

The lecture, part of the Honors Programs' Academic Speakers Series at UT Martin, is free and open to the public.

A South Carolina native, Carter graduated from the University of South Carolina and completed his graduate work in history at the University of Wisconsin and the University of North Carolina. He has been a professor and visiting scholar at Emory University, the University of Maryland, the University of Wisconsin, London's Westminster University, Cambridge University and the University of Genoa.

The author and editor of more than a half dozen works of history, Carter won the Bancroft Prize, the Saturday Review Anisfield Wolfe Award, the Lillian Smith Award and a special citation from the Mystery Writers of America for "Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South." His other prize-winning books include "When the War Was Over: The Failure of Self-Reconstruction in the South, 1865-1867;" "The Politics of Rage: George Wallace, the Origins of the New Conservatism and the Transformation of American Politics;" and "The Politics of Rage."

Carter, former President of the Southern Historical Association, is the recipient of four teaching awards during his career. He has also served as a consultant on more than a half dozen television documentaries and docudramas.

Carter's appearance is co-sponsored by Honors Programs and the Department of History and Philosophy and is made possible by the Organization of American Historians' Lectureship Program.

There will be a reception in the Boling University Center following Carter's presentation, sponsored by the UT Martin department of history and philosophy. This reception is open to the public.

The Academic Speakers Program annually brings distinguished scholars, writers and performers to the UT Martin campus. Other speakers in this year's series, also scheduled to present at 7:30 p.m. in the Boling University Center's Watkins Auditorium include:
