| Professor of American history to give lecture on Civil War Nov. 8 |

MARTIN, Tenn. – Dr. David Coffey, chair of the Department of History and Philosophy and professor of history at the University of Tennessee at Martin, will present a lecture titled “The Civil War at 150” at 7:30 p.m., Nov. 8. His presentation will be held in Watkins Auditorium of the Boling University Center on the UT Martin main campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin.
Born in New Mexico and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, Coffey holds a doctorate from Texas Christian University, and teaches classes in U.S. and Latin American history at UT Martin.
His books include “John Bell Hood and the Struggle for Atlanta,” “Soldier Princess: The Life and Legend of Agnes Salm-Salm in North America, 1861-1867” and “Sheridan’s Lieutenants: Phil Sheridan, His Generals, and the Final Year of the Civil War.”
He has contributed to 10 major historical reference works and served as an editor on three award-winning projects, including “The Encyclopedia of the Vietnam War.”
He also recently completed editing work on a new multi-volume encyclopedia of the Civil War. Coffey is the 2012 recipient of UT Martins’s Cunningham Outstanding Teacher/Scholar Award, that recognizes strength in teaching and contributions to the teaching profession.
"Dr. Coffey has distinguished himself as a noteworthy historian of whom UT Martin can be proud,” said Lionel Crews, director of Honors Programs. “I very much look forward to hearing him speak about such a powerful event as the Civil War.”
His lecture is sponsored by UT Martin Honors Programs and is free and open to the public.
