MARTIN, Tenn. – Wesley Totten, associate professor of plant science in the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences and, Natural Resources, was named the UT Martin Featured Faculty Scholar for Fall 2012 during a ceremony, Nov. 15 in the Paul Meek Library. The award recognizes excellence in teaching and scholarship.
“It’ a great honor today for me to be able to speak on his behalf today for this wonderful award,” said Tim Burcham, professor and interim chair of the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences, and Natural Resources, during the award presentation. “He has developed and taught 14 different preps, 14 different courses, here at UT Martin … that’s an incredible amount of preps for a faculty member.”
Addressing the audience, Totten thanked his family and the university for their support.
“I’ll continue to work hard for the university and continue to help build this university’s legacy, which I’m very proud of,” Totten said. “Please know that I love this university, and I’ll continue to give everything that I’ve got.”
Totten specializes in golf course and landscape management. His career began at UT Martin in 2007 as an assistant professor, and he was promoted to associate professor in 2011. He received a bachelor’s in agronomy and soils and a master’s in horticulture from Auburn University in 2000 and 2003 respectively. He obtained his Ph.D. in plant and environmental sciences from Clemson University in 2006.
Totten has had nine scholarly articles published and has given 21 professional presentations to peers in recent years. He was also named UT Martin’s 2012 Hardy Graham Distinguished Professor and received the 2011 North American College and Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award of Merit.
A display featuring examples of Totten’s work will be on display in the Paul Meek Library through the end of the fall semester.
