| Conference to address "Keeping Our Children Safe" |

MARTIN, Tenn. – Today’s children are growing up in a more dangerous world than ever before. In an effort to educate parents, teachers and community members about these growing concerns, the University of Tennessee at Martin’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, in cooperation with the West Tennessee Association for the Education of Young Children, will host a conference titled “Keeping Our Children Safe…A Community Effort” from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., March 23, in the Boling University Center.
Sgt. Len Edwards, executive director of the Commission on Missing and Exploited Children, will serve as the event’s featured speaker. Participants can also attend three breakout sessions over the course of the conference.
Session speakers include Bonnie Hinds, a health educator with the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service; Dr. Sue Byrd and Dr. Marti Herndon, UT Martin professors of family and consumer sciences; Dr. Joey Mehlhorn, professor and interim chair of the UT Martin Department Family and Consumer Sciences; Kelly Tivey, director of the Tennessee Early Childhood Training Alliance through Dyersburg State Community College; Cpt. Ray Coleman, UT Martin Department of Public Safety; and Cathy Waggoner, program administrator, and Lori Suiter, business administrator, at the Promethean Foundation in Union City.
Angela O’Brien, executive director of the Healthy Start Program at UT Martin, urges community members to attend the conference to “educate themselves in techniques to keep children safe in school, home and out in the community.”
Those interested must register for their chosen sessions from 7-8 a.m. on the
morning of the conference. Registration is $20 per person, cash only, and any student with a current student ID will be admitted free.
Participants will receive five hours of training credit for attending. Non-profit vendors will also be present, and door prizes will be distributed throughout the event.
