MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA) was named the number one collegiate chapter in the state on Feb. 25 during the Tennessee FFA Alumni Convention at Montgomery Bell State Park near Dickson. The UT Martin chapter has received this award eight of the last 10 years.
UT Martin FFA members competed in a variety of academic and professional competitions against students from four other state universities and placed in five of nine categories.
First-place winners in the public speaking and job interview categories were Emily Keeton, a junior from Bath Springs; Dakota Brasher, a sophomore from Reagan; Brandon Stewart, a sophomore from Lexington; and Gina Locke, a sophomore from Franklin.
Second-place winners in the public speaking, job interview and agricultural discussion categories were Chris Martin, a senior from Sharon; Elizabeth Graef, a senior from Portland; and Brette Akridge, a freshman from White House. Akridge also won first place in the chapter scrapbook competition.
The UT Martin agricultural quiz bowl team also won first place. This year’s all-freshman team included Justin Serio, of White House; Jeff Rogers, of Munford; Greg Berford, of Covington; and Rachel Ralston, of Murfreesboro.
Keeton and Stephen McBride also received academic scholarships from the Tennessee FFA Foundation to assist with their agricultural studies and expenses.
“It is obvious we have a great group of collegiate FFA students this year,” said Dr. James Butler, professor of agricultural education and FFA advisor. “They are very knowledgeable of the industry and love to participate in this annual competition.”
