MARTIN, Tenn. – West Tennessee students in grades K-12 are encouraged to compete in the first annual Academic Quiz Bowl from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on April 13 at the University of Tennessee at Martin, sponsored by the UT Martin Department of Educational Studies.

Elementary, middle and high school students will be divided into one of the following competition categories based on grade level: K-3, 4-6, 7-8 and 9-12. Teams consist of five students, and each school may enter up to three teams. Students will participate in double-elimination matches, each consisting of three 10-minute rounds. Home school students are also welcome to participate, provided they enter as a team.

Questions will focus on science, mathematics, history, sports and popular culture. Calculators are not permitted for the mathematics questions. The tournament will follow the National Academic Quiz Tournament rules, available at www.naqt.com/rules.html.

Tournament check-in will begin at 8 a.m., with the first match beginning at 9 a.m. The awards ceremony will be at 4:30 p.m. First-place trophies will be awarded to the winning team in each category, and a grand tournament trophy will be awarded to the team with the highest overall score.

The entry fee is $10 per team. Parents, guardians, teachers and school personnel are welcome to accompany their teams. All students are responsible for providing their own lunches. Fast food restaurants are available on the UT Martin campus and in the local area. UT Martin student groups will have food and beverages available for purchase as well.

If you are interested in entering a student team, please contact Dr. Louis Glover, tournament director and assistant professor of educational studies, at 731-881- 7214 or by email at lglover5@utm.edu to request a registration form. Pre-registration is required, and all information must be received by March 30.
