UT Martin student from Newbern appointed to Tennessee Higher Education Commission

MARTIN, Tenn. — A University of Tennessee at Martin student has been named by Gov. Bill Haslam as student member to the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Greg Frye, a junior Bachelor of University Studies major from Newbern, will serve two years on the commission, one as a non-voting member and the second as a voting member.

University of Tennessee and Tennessee Board of Regents students are selected by the governor to serve on the commission. UT rotates the student member every two years among the UT Health Science Center and the Chattanooga, Knoxville and Martin campuses.

Frye enrolled in 2008 at UT Martin a week before his 39th birthday. Active in the Non-Traditional Students Association, Frye is also involved in the UT Martin Student Government Association, Habitat for Humanity and serves as a Peer Enabling Program leader, assisting university freshmen with the transition to college life.

Before coming to UT Martin, Frye was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after serving in the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles at Ft. Campbell, Ky. He is also a professional touring drummer, performing for and supporting independent and professional country and rockabilly music artists. He plans to attend law school after graduation.

“I’m grateful to Gov. Haslam for this opportunity to represent Tennessee college students as a commission member,” Frye said. “Higher education is opening new opportunities for me, and I hope to use this appointment as a platform to encourage others to pursue the great higher-education opportunities that Tennessee has to offer.”

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission was created in 1967 by the Tennessee General Assembly to coordinate and support the efforts of Tennessee post-secondary institutions. The 15-member commission meets quarterly in Nashville.
