Situation The typical West Tennessee community is run by a diverse cast of characters. Beyond a small number of visible elected officials and business leaders, community leadership can be found in a less visible, but active, group of tenaciously caring citizens. They are the ones who attend significant community meetings; they provide educational and social services; they chair important civic committees; and they help raise the funds to keep the important civic ventures going. They come from all walks of life including neighborhood leaders, housewives, professionals, executives, educators, and other citizens. Just about everyone in the community knows who they are. In earlier times they all came from the same socio-economic class and the word "Establishment" was used to describe them. Today they are of diverse origins and the chief qualification is an unswerving devotion to the not very glamorous task of keeping a community in working order and having a vision for the future.
Mission The WestStar mission is to identify, encourage and equip community-minded people who want to become more involved, want to help West Tennessee become a better place, and are willing to accept assertive and dynamic leadership roles. Participants learn new leadership skills and develop strategies for assisting communities in solving problems and maximizing potential. Participants also become part of a growing network of other leaders who, through mutual support and assistance, shape the future of West Tennessee .
Vision WestStar will be the premier leadership program in the U.S. that establishes an elite group of people bonded by their commitment to realizing the educational, economic and social development of West Tennessee .
