Emily Jones, of White Bluff, chose to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin because she was offered an athletic scholarship to run cross country and track. She knew the university’s reputation for having many strong academic programs, so the decision was easy.

She stayed because, as a hearing-impaired student, she immediately received the assistance she needed to succeed in her courses.

“There are instances when I have a hard time understanding the professors,” said Jones, a health and human performance major on track to graduate in spring 2013 with a Bachelor of Science degree. “The university’s Office of Disabilities Services has provided me accommodations to help me to be successful in all of my classes, and I really like that a lot about the university.” She added that the university faculty and staff are “willing to help you with whatever you need in order for you to be a successful person and graduate with a degree.”

Jones’ concentration is in exercise science and wellness, and her career goal is to become an audiologist.
