Union City, Tenn
Most seven-year-olds don't know what they want to do when they grow up. Diana Ramos was different.
Ramos, a sophomore from Union City, aspires to become director of nursing at a local hospital to help patients and families through the healing process and assit those who may have trouble understanding English.
"I saw the difficulty that my family had communicating with doctors and nurses. I want to make the process easier for other families by translating," said Ramos. Thanks to her parents, she is fluent in both English and Spanish and has been translating for local Hispanic families for years.
Ramos discussed her difficulties filling out papers such as the FAFSA. "I am the first person in my family to attend college, so we had to have help applying," she said. Even though it was a hard process, Ramos was driven and knew she would attend college no matter what. Her parents always told her to get her education because "no one could take your education away from you."
Ramos works as a personal care assistant at the Ethridge House in Union City to help put herself through school. She loves building relationships with the patients and enjoys that this job provides her with practice for clinicals. Ramos also works with UT Martin's WestStar Leadership Program. "It has been a blessing to have this workstudy position. I have met some of Tennessee's greatest leaders," said Ramos.
She has recently been accepted into the UT Martin nursing program, the second-highest ranked nursing program in Tennessee. She is excited about this opportunity and looks forward to the hands-on experience she will receive during clinicals. Ramos is on her way to becoming a nurse, and Ramos knows she is up for the challenge. "I am a time manager. I have learned how to prioritize my time between class, studying and work," she said.
"UTM has changed me. I feel like I have family here," said Ramos, who chose UT Martin because of the small campus environment and caring professors.
Ramos intends to graduate in 2018.
