Josh Weiss, a senior communications and sport management double major, already knew that networking was important. What he didn’t know were the lengths one of his professors would go to get him “connected.”
Weiss, who is in the public relations program at UT Martin, had the opportunity to cover a football game at Auburn University for The Pacer (student newspaper) in the fall of 2009. His professor made sure Weiss was introduced to a man at the game who worked for The Pacer a number of years ago. He now works for the Auburn Athletic Communications office.
“He gave me many useful tips and allowed me to ask questions,” said Weiss of the Auburn contact. “It was great that my professor went out of his way to do such a thing. I am still in touch with that professional at Auburn, and he will be a great resource now that I am looking into graduate school.
Weiss, of Germantown, has served as an Office of Campus Recreation student supervisor. “This means that I was directly in charge of running the recreational activities on campus, including intramural sports.” As part of his career goals, he wants to operate a community center for underprivileged children. “I know the skills that I learned about running such a facility are invaluable and will definitely benefit me in achieving these future plans.”
Weiss is also currently taking advantage of another educational experience – studying at London Metropolitan University. He was the first UT Martin student selected for a new semester-long communications exchange program.
“I cannot describe how excited I am for the opportunity to do something that will be so life-changing,” said Weiss. “This is what college is about, gaining insight and information about new situations and cultures. I know that I'll learn so much just by my daily interactions with the people there, and I’m just so thankful to both UT Martin and the communications department for asking me to be a representative.”
