Jasmine Newsome is best known around UT Martin for her abilities on the basketball court. On March 17, 2012, the Skyhawk Women's basketball team faced UT Knoxville's Lady Vols in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
A point guard for the Skyhawk Women's basketball team, Jasmine ranks 17th in the nation for scoring, averaging 19.9 points per game, and 12th in the nation for assisting, averaging 6.1 assists per game.
As a sophomore, Jasmine quickly proved she is a force to be reckoned with. She reached 1,000 career points in a matter of 55 games. Her record beat that of Lady Vols coach and UT Martin alum, Pat Summitt, who achieved her 1,000 career points in 59 games. Jasmine fell short only to her teammate, Heather Butler, who earned her career points in just 50 games, the fastest scoring record in UT Martin history.
Jasmine was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and moved to Memphis, where she graduated from Millington Central High School. She knew UT Martin was the place for her when she signed with the Women Skyhawks in November of her senior year of high school.
Since she was in sixth grade, Jasmine has been an avid basketball player. "Everybody in my family plays softball or baseball. But when I was about nine, I got hit in the face by a softball, so I didn't want to play that. I think I just started playing basketball in the backyard by myself."
When Jasmine entered UT Martin as a freshman, she was already in the starting line-up for the Women Skyhawks. "We're like a family," Jasmine said of her teammates. "We go everywhere together." Of UT Martin, Jasmine said, "I like the community here, the family atmosphere. I just love that."
Between balancing basketball and classes, Jasmine really appreciates the help her professors and coaches have to offer. "I get so much support. I can go to my teachers and get help. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else, where they would just let me slide."
Recently, Jasmine changed her major from criminal justice to sports management. She said, "I want to work in sports." Ultimately, Jasmine would like to go overseas to work with professional basketball teams. She's also interested in coaching.
