Tyler Holmes, of Chattanooga, is a health and human performance major with a variety of interests who appreciates the University of Tennessee at Martin for its small class sizes and close relationships with professors.
“I had an English professor who ran marathons,” Holmes said. “That was pretty cool.”
A former cross country and track runner himself, Holmes said being a part of the track team was a great experience.
“I came to UT Martin to run cross country and track. It was a really neat experience to be able to meet up with people from different areas of the state and kind of come together and be on the team,” he said. “It was just a wonderful experience.”
Holmes said he hopes go into the military and attend physical therapy school soon after graduation and commended his professors for his preparation for the challenge.
“I feel that the classes and professors I’ve had have properly equipped me to go to PT school and become successful in the future,” he said, adding that one of this favorite classes on campus was exercise science, which he took with Dr. Todd Sherman, professor of health and human performance. “He’s just a very energetic professor, makes class a lot of fun, but at the same time you learn a lot … he is actually an exercise physiologist and has worked in hospitals in that kind of area, so he gives you a lot of hands-on experience.”
Holmes has also taken an interest in photography and currently works on campus as a photography intern in the Office of University Relations on campus.
“Basically I cover anything the university needs for media releases or press releases, and I also do a lot of the athletic events,” he said.
For Holmes, recommending future students to UT Martin is a no-brainer.
“I would recommend UT Martin for a variety of reasons. One, you have a small-town atmosphere. Secondly, your classes are small, you get to know your professors, and they know you by name. Thirdly, it’s just a really unique experience, I don’t think there’s another college in Tennessee where you’re going to get the same experience as you would here at UT Martin,” he said.
